Jim Thorpe Memorial

Went to visit the Jim Thorpe memorial park back in May of this year. Finally made the plan and had the time to visit the park that honors this man for his great accomplishments!

The memorial park is located on 1300 Block North St (State Route 903) in Jim Thorpe and is open 24/7 for people to visit.

During my visit I did notice that the elements and time are taking their toll on the displays and the other structures within the park.

The borough of Jim Thorpe has made the decision to revitalize the park and give it a face lift.

The town was originally named Mauch Chunk during its anthracite coal mining days but once the coal deposits were depleted, the borough began looking for other ways to bring in revenue for the town. The borough was able to acquire the remains from Jim Thorpe’s widow and renamed the borough in his honor. It was thought at the time that the baseball hall of fame would be located in Jim Thorpe, which would bring in jobs and tourists for the needed revenue that was lost when the coal mines shut down.

Today the borough is a well known tourist town that offers small town charm along with the beauty of the Pocono Mountains.

Be sure to visit the site that this mountain town has been named after upon adding this town to your bucket list.
