Exploring A Former Coal Mining Town

I’m sharing some photos and information about my hometown of Nesquehoning, PA. The borough of Nesquehoning is a former anthracite coal mining town in Carbon County, PA. The borough was incorporated in 1964 and prior to that was part of the Mauch Chuck Township which is now present day Jim Thorpe, PA.

The name is of First Nation origin believed to mean narrow valley but First Nations’ language scholars translate as, to the black lick, referencing the mineral licks that deer and other animals used in the area.

The Neighborhoods

There are four neighborhoods in the borough of Nesquehoning;

Nesquehoning Village – this is the most populated neighborhood of the borough from the southeastern section to Nesquehoning creek on the north.

New Columbus – this is the second most populated neighborhood of the borough which is the area located north of Nesquehoning creek.

Old Hauto – this neighborhood is located in the southwest section of the borough with the base of Nesquehoning mountain to the south and the creek to the north. This neighborhood has the Old Hauto village and the Hauto Valley Estates along RT 54.

Lake Hauto – this is a lakeside community located on the northern section of Lake Hauto, a private lake front community in Rush Township, that falls within the boroughs’ borders.

The borough is located close to attractions within the Pocono Mountain region and within the nearby area. The area offers a lot of natural beauty and outdoor activities even though it is experiencing an economic downturn due to the mining industry leaving the area.
